Authorities Arrest Three Over Far-Right Violence in Northern Ireland

(MENAFN) Northern Ireland authorities have arrested three individuals in connection with recent far-right disturbances in Belfast, with officials indicating that additional arrests are likely as investigations continue.

Speaking to lawmakers on Wednesday, Security Minister Dan Jarvis said inquiries remain ongoing following the disorder that erupted in the city, while police pledged to identify and take action against anyone involved in the violence.

The unrest occurred Monday night on Kinnaird Street in North Belfast and resulted in serious injuries to a man in his 40s, Stephen Ogilvy, who remains hospitalized.

According to police, Ogilvy sustained severe eye injuries as well as slash wounds to his face and back. A court hearing in Belfast on Wednesday was told that he lost his left eye as a result of the attack.

In a public statement, his family appealed for calm and rejected attempts to use the incident to fuel division, saying: “we have many migrants who make a deeply valuable contribution to our country. We depend on them to make our country work. We do not want this terrible tragedy to be used to divide people.”

Authorities said a suspect, Hadi Alodid, a Sudanese national, was detained at the scene and appeared before a court on Wednesday, where he was ordered to remain in custody pending further proceedings.
