UK Defense Chief Reaffirms Close Alliance with US
Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Streeting addressed the issue a day after a suspected terror plot was reported near RAF Fairford, a British military base in Gloucestershire that hosts US Air Force operations.
Authorities declared a major incident on Sunday in a nearby village and evacuated 85 households after police detained five men as part of an investigation into suspected offenses under the Explosives Act.
“There is a live police investigation and I can’t provide much further detail than that which is reported,” Streeting told conference attendees.
“But I do want to say that our friendship with America is the closest alliance of any two nations on earth, and we will always stand together against those who hate our freedom and those who wish us harm.”
Streeting also commended Britain’s security agencies, armed forces and police for their handling of the incident.
